Astronomy & Space Fact
After the first powered Wright Flyer of 1903 made history at Kitty Hawk, NC, the Wright brothers disassembled it & shipped it to Dayton, Ohio, where it was stored in a shed behind their bicycle shop for more than a decade. In March '13, Dayton was hit by a serious flood, & the boxes containing the Flyer were submerged in water & mud for 11 days. In the summer of '16 Orville repaired & reassembled the airplane for brief exhibition at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Today in History:
1882: Arthur S. Eddington born, British theoretical astrophysicist who was instrumental in showing why stars are the way they are. He also gave the name "expanding universe" to the mutual recession of the galaxies.
1961: Titan II, an advanced ICBM and the booster designated for NASA's two-man orbital flights, was successfully captive-fired for the first time at the Martin Co.'s Denver facilities. The test not only tested the flight vehicle but the checkout and launch equipment intended for operational use.
1973: Comet Kohoutek perihelion, Dr. Lubos Kohoutek talks live with Skylab 4 crew observing the comet.
