Today in History:


1947: Max Karl Ernst Ludwig Planck died in Göttingen, Germany

1957: the USSR launched the world's first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1.

1959: Luna 3 - USSR Lunar Far Side Flyby launched. Encountered the Moon on October 7, 1959 and returned the first image of the Moon's hidden side. Space probe is now in a decayed earth-moon orbit.

1965: Luna 7 - USSR Lunar Soft Lander launched. Luna 7 failed and impacted the moon.

1957: Sputnik-1 launched. First artificial satellite.
