La Nina Will Have No Effect on 2006 Atlantic Hurricanes
NASA oceanographers agree that the recent La Nina in the eastern Pacific Ocean is not expected to have an effect on the Atlantic hurricane season this year. That is good news, because normally a La Niña tends to increase Atlantic hurricane activity and decrease Pacific Ocean hurricanes.
Retired Astronaut Eugene Cernan Visits Torino Olympics
On December 11, 1972, the Apollo 17 crew were the last men to set foot on the moon. The last to leave the surface to ascend into the lunar module was Eugene Cernan who stated, "America's challenge of today has forged man's destiny of tomorrow." Recently, Eugene Cernan, now retired from NASA, visited Torino, Italy as a guest of the Omega corporation, Official Timekeeper of the Torino 2006 Olympic Winter Games.

Intrepid Solar Spacecraft Celebrates 10th Anniversary
The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) spacecraft celebrates its 10th anniversary December 2. The SOHO mission, a collaboration between NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA), has allowed scientists to make significant advances in understanding the closest star, our sun. This includes the violent solar activity that causes stormy space weather, which can disrupt satellites, radio communication, and power systems on Earth.
Hurricane Katrina Devastates Gulf Coast and New Orleans
On Monday, August 29, hurricane Katrina slammed into the gulf coast of the US, bringing death and destruction. Now, several days later, the full affects of Katrina are not yet known, and it appears it will be quite some time before they can be measured, much less remedied. It now seems clear that New Olreans and the other cities nearly wiped off the map will never be the same.

SpaceShipOne Captures X Prize
It is official. With an announcement posted on the X Prize website, Scaled Composites's SpaceShipOne has completed its second required flight and secured the $10 million Ansari X Prize. Blasting to an altitude of 364,000 feet (70 miles)aboard SpaceShipOne, eight miles beyond what was needed, pilot Brian Binnie "made history," in the words of Peter Diamandis, co-founder of the X Prize Foundation, whose $10 million award was intended to spur civilian spaceflight.
