Chandra X-Ray Telescope News & Images

To the human eye, space appears serene and void. To an X-ray telescope, the universe is totally different a violent, vibrant, and ever-changing place. The Chandra X-ray Observatory allows scientists to obtain unprecedented X-ray images of these and other exotic environments to help understand the structure and evolution of the universe.
Giant Galaxy's Violent Past Comes Into Focus - Chandra Image
Two observations by NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory of the giant elliptical galaxy M87 were combined to make this long-exposure image. A central jet is surrounded by nearby bright arcs and dark cavities in the multimillion degree Celsius atmosphere of M87. Further out, about 50,000 light years from the galaxy's center, faint rings can be seen and two spectacular plumes extend beyond the rings.
Chandra Reveals Two Faces of Supernova Power
The NASA Chandra X-ray Observatory image of SNR 0540-69.3 clearly shows two aspects of the enormous power released when a massive star explodes. An implosion crushed material into an extremely dense (10 mi. diameter) neutron star, triggering an explosion that sent a shock wave rumbling through space at speeds above 5 million mph.
Mars Express Enters Orbit Around the Red Planet
Feb 2 2004 - This morning, after a journey lasting 205 days and covering 400 million km, the European Mars Express space probe fired its main engine at 03:47 CET for a 37-minute burn in order to enter an orbit around the Mars. This orbit insertion maneuver was a complete success.
