Cassiopeia was the wife of Cepheus, the Ethiopian king of Joppa. She was the mother of Andromeda. It is said she was both beautiful and vain. She was turned to stone by Perseus, using the head of a Gorgon. If you don't know who or what a Gorgon was, you should read some of Bullfinch's stories in our Classic Literature site.

If Cassiopeia looks familiar, you may have done our Backyard Experiment, Constellations in a Cannister. If not, then you should. It's a great way to learn some more of the constellations.

Now, practice looking for constellations whenever you have a chance. Take you sky map outside and look skyward. Before you know it, you'll be an expert.
