Top Space Songs - Space Rock For The Ages

Top Space Songs 5 Through 2

From , former About.com Guide

In March of 1973, Pink Floyd released the album "Dark Side of the Moon." It moved fairly quickly into the number one position on the album charts and has stayed on the charts practically ever since. No other album has stayed on any chart for as long.

For many years, there have been rumors tying "Dark Side of the Moon" with the film "Wizard of Oz." The story goes that you should start your Pink Floyd "Dark Side of the Moon" CD at the exact moment the MGM lion finishes it's third and final roar. They say the music tracks the story line. I don't know, but it is awesome music. The number 5 song on our countdown is actually "Brain Damage/Eclipse," a combination of two songs, which are often mistakenly called "Dark Side of the Moon."

In 1997 novelty rock group, Smash Mouth burst on the music scene with their hit, the '50s-influenced "Walkin' on the Sun." Since then, they have continued to demonstrate their talent with a number of other excellent hits. Although we don't expect any astronauts to ever perform this feat, the number 4 sound on out countdown is Smash Mouth's "Walking On the Sun."

This next group started life as the Blue Velvets. Later, they signed with Fantasy Records as the Golliwogs. The ink had barely dried on that contract when they re-signed with Fantasy changing their names again. On the 1969 song, "It Came Out of the Sky" Creedence Clearwater Revival asked a question about what would happen if an alien actually landed on Earth. That same year, on the album, Green River, there is another celestial CCR song, "Bad Moon Rising," which happens to be out number 3 song.

Despite something of a decline in interest in Space exploration, the public has continued to have a fascination with space. Just look at some of the most popular movies during the last portion of the century:

  • 2001: A Space Odyssey
  • E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial
  • Close Encounters Of The Third Kind
  • Armageddon
  • Deep Impact
  • Independence Day
  • Space Cowboys
  • The Star Trek TV series, and movies,
  • And, of course, Star Wars.

In 1977, an electronic disco musician by the name of Meco Monardo shocked the world when he topped the chart for 2 weeks with his version of the "Star Wars Theme and Cantina Band." This catchy tune takes our number 2 slot, it's Meco with "Star Wars Theme and Cantina Band."

Now, it's time for Number One of our Top Ten Space Songs.
