Columbias Recorder Provides Useful Data

Orbiter Experiment Support System (OEX) Recorder

From NASA, for About.com

The Columbia Accident Investigation Board announced today that there is significant data on the Orbiter Experiment Support System (OEX) Recorder. After a preliminary review of the recorder, the board has learned that there are approximately 420 sensors with good data, with more to come. These sensors record mainly temperatures and pressures.

The board has also learned that the first heating event occurred earlier than previously reported. This analysis of the recorder data is the result of 100 NASA people working throughout the weekend. The board will continue gathering information from the OEX recorder. This new data will be inserted into the timeline.

Additional information developed from analysis of useful data from the OEX recorder will be released as it becomes available.
