Visiting the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center

From Nick Greene, for About.com

Goddard Space Flight Center

Goddard Space Flight Center

NASA
The NASA Goddard Space Flight Center is located in Greenbelt, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, DC.The Visitor Center at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Visitor Center offers many unique programs, special events and presentations that highlight Goddard's contributions to America's Space Program. Goddard Space Flight Center contributes to the knowledge of the Earth and the universe through scientific discovery from space to enhance life on Earth. Visit and hear lectures, see exciting model rocket launches, and participate in one of their fun filled children's programs.

Hubble Space Telescope: New Views of the Universe Exhibit:

The exhibit contains images and data taken from the Hubble Space Telescope of planets, galaxies, black holes, and much more. The exhibit is comprised of spectacular backlit color images and contains numerous interactive displays. These include a video game to determine the distance to galaxies, an infrared camera that takes pictures of your hand to demonstrate the different wavelengths of light, and an electronic galaxy counter to guess at the number of galaxies in the universe.

The Sun as Art:

This show presents a new way of looking at the Sun, made possible by advances in imaging technology and sophisticated spacecraft engineering. Its goal is to entertain while generating a renewed interest in the Sun, a star that is generally taken for granted as a plain round ball of fiery gas that changes very little. The images will show otherwise. They are based, in all instances, on images captured by the SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) and TRACE (Transition Region and Coronal Explorer) since 1996. Both missions are managed at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD. New programs to study further the Sun-Earth system (Living with a Star and Solar Terrestrial Probes) are already underway. We hope that visitors are surprised with the range of colors, shapes and striking beauty that our observations of the Sun have captured and learn something of the science and techniques involved in its study. Many images are presented with no manipulation at all; in some, only color tables are altered; in the most inventive, pieces were cut and moved around.May you come away with a sense of the variety and wonder of the Sun and a keen sense that art and science are not always so far apart as we believe. The images were produced for NASA by Steele Hill of L3 government services.

FRIZION: Ice as Art; Come to the FRIZION: Ice as Art exhibit currently on display at the Goddard Visitor Center. Goddard's renowned Astrophysicist, Peter Wasilewski has developed a process for photographing ice like none other. The name FRIZION was derived by combining two words that capture the essence of this new art form “frozen” & “vision.” Each piece begins as a vessel of water, which is then frozen, manipulated, and viewed through polarized light. The resultant image becomes a FRIZION.

Through a process called birefringence the ice crystal is manipulated to display vibrant and arresting colors, and as the ice is forged, striking shapes and shadows arise.

Landsat -7 Earth as Art Gallery:

View our planet through the beautiful images taken by the Landsat-7 satellite. These images, created by the USGS EROS Data Center, introduce the general public to the Landsat Program administered jointly by USGS and NASA. The Landsat: Earth as Art exhibit highlights images that were selected on the basis of aesthetic appeal. These images use the visceral avenue of art to convey the thrilling perspective of the Earth that Landsat provides to the viewer.

NASA Goddard Space Flight Center History:

Since its inception in 1959, the NASA/ Goddard Space Flight Center has been at the forefront of Space and Earth science. The Center was named after Dr. Robert H. Goddard who is considered "The Father of American Rocketry." Goddard's fundamental mission is to expand our knowledge of the Earth and its environment, the solar system and the universe through observations from space. Goddard Space Flight Center is home to the largest collection of scientists and engineers dedicated to exploring Earth from space that can be found anywhere in the world.
