Massive Tsunami From a Comet?

Friday May 5, 2006
As we told you the other day, there is no danger from Comet 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3. On his Bad Astronomy Blog, Phil Plait talks about Eric Julien, a "doomsdayer" who uses crop circles and pseudo-science to claim that a large piece of the comet will strike Earth on May 25.

The claim that Phil really takes exception with is that this collision will result in a tsunami. He does a great job at simplifying the reasons why the odds of such a scenario are "vanishingly small (that’s scientist-speak again for really really small)." As he says, Julien has "a whole lot of bunk to toss around… and the impact of that is just as bad as a comet’s."

I may be concerned about Near Earth Objects, but I'm definitely not worried about Comet 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3.

Maybe you need to take another look at
73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3-BD on the NASA site, look at the min miss distance……your a fool!

are you stupid or just inaccuarte? I have a degree in physics and worked at argonne national labs and have friends in NASA as I live in FL right now and if you LOOK at the NASA NEO link it shows 73P chunks on the NEO list!

why is that important? to quote your own post you said to be worried about about NEO objects but not 73P?!?

so are you stupid or just inaccuate?

I’m not sure how 11 Million kilometers could be considered a threat. Yes, I do think we could some day be threatened by an NEO, but this comet is not the one. However, if you would like to hide in a fall out shelter, that is your right.

The Guy Talks sheer BS and Yes I glanced over his random rants and some BS pics he has created. Most funny were his “Extraterrestrial Friends”. I pity such meditators and hope they would get some psychiatric help!!!

Interesting article, Keep. Things fall from the sky all the time, though. And, while the item mentioned in the article could have seriously injured or even killed someone, it wouldn’t have caused the massive problems a large piece of a comet would.

Thanks for sharing.

what’s weird is the story a couple of weeks ago about the maui air traffic controller/astronomer who predicted a collision has disappeared completely off the net, in a way like i have never seen before. dept. of homeland panic control?

Where, did the story originate from. What did it entail?
