Extent of Oil Spill Seen From Space - Image of the Week

This addition of the Image of the Week feature really needs no introduction. This image, taken on June 25 of this year by The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Terra satellite, depicts the extent of the oil that has leaked into the Gulf of Mexico.

The approximate location of the Horizon deep water oil rig is marked in the image for reference. Light from the Sun is clearly seen reflecting off of the oil rich areas of the ocean. This disaster has truly been devastating.

Thee short term damage, not to mention the long term environmental impact, this catastrophe has caused may be irreversible. The hope is that the day-to-day lives of those who depend on the gulf region for their livelihoods can return to some semblance of normalcy, and that clean-up efforts continue to go as planned, resulting in a speedy resolution.

It ’s saddens me to see how we, as human beings, could be so careless. It disturbs me that we, as human beings, let personal desires for money, cloud their judgement of what is simply a matter of what is right and wrong. (We all started out with parents, right?)

Hopefully, the powers that be, will get there act together.
Just solve the problem and heal the earth. How hard is that?????
