TIROS - World's First Weather Satellite

Monday August 18, 2008
Our Guide to Weather, Rachelle Oblack, does a great job of telling the story of TIROS - World's First Weather Satellite.

TIROS stands for Television Infrared Observation Satellite. Rachelle says, "Launched on April 1, 1960 from Cape Canaveral, Florida, the TIROS-1 satellite was the first step to space-based meteorology."

Follow along as she tells the story of the entire TIROS program, including the satellites TIROS-1 through TIROS 10. This is a fascinating look at the beginnings of modern weather forcasting and a far cry from the older 1950s Weather Report.

(1) Peter McQuillan says:

For the Little Joe 1 accidental launch, I have seen twice tonight the comment that a coil to protect live creatures failed.that is absolute fabrication.
I have a Wallops island report that states every accident at Wallops island lover a 15 year period. The report is 774 pages long and written by?????? Joseph Adams Shortal, and if you know anything about Mercury-Little Joe you will respect his report!! Nasa reference Publication 1028. Page 200. quote–”– one of the wires from the battery was connected to the solenoid that armed the destruct system along a path that also led to the terminal of the rapid abort plug–”

If you visit my site and look up LJ1 a full explanation is given. I quote a NASA report. I think you have copied someone elses rediculous explanation, if not I would like to know where this info came from about a failed Life protecting coil??
Type in Project Mercury- little joe, and follow the links to LJ1 on my site.

P.S. you are incorrectly reporting historical fact. It’s your duty to correct this.
