Sex in Space?

Wednesday October 3, 2007
Down below, in my Blog, when I mention "Expedition 16 Crew to Launch from Baikonur," Thomas posted a comment with a question.

He says, "I always wondered, is sex possible in space, and could a baby be delivered in space?"

I responded to his question, but I would be very interested in hearing what others think about this topic. Check out the comments and leave one of your own.Share your thoughts on sex in space with the rest of us.

Just be polite and keep it PG rated.

If someone were to have a baby, would the babies lungs be able to prosses enough air to breath? since it is hard to breath up there, what would happen with a new born?

The mechanics are ez The real question
would be who would be tethered and ware. I think both partners on wrists. However, flying a large space for this purpose would be cost prohibitive

Mo,

If a baby were to be born, it would be in an artificial environment, so the atmosphere would be very Earth-like. I don’t believe breathing would be the problem.

Brooks,

Traveling to space is definitely cost prohibitive now, but who knows about the future. There may be hotels in space some day.

This would be an experement that I would volenteer for, for sure. Space is the final fronteer and if we as a spiecies needs to survive we need to explore space.(we all know that) So I think we have been giving birth in much harsher enviroment known eg. extreame cold, massive heat, storms, and on. atmosheres can be replicated and has been. The question is over the generations, been born in space will they have legs?

Hendrik,

I bet you’re not the only one who would volunteer for that experiment.

I don’t believe that there have been any babies born in conditions has hazardous as space. Besides the low gravity, there is also radiation to be concerned with.

I have no doubt that eventually we’ll work out all the difficulties.

Cheers!

Hi Terry,

I was wondering when someone would come up with that one. :-)

Interesting article here from The Guardian. From what I’ve heard, pretty much everybody agrees that there has been sex in space (in the Russian program if not the U.S. program) but nobody’s talking who or when.

Pregnancy in space could be dangerous to the fetus for two reasons that come to mind, the first being radiation, the second being the unknown effects of gravity on embryological development, but I suspect it would be possible.

You’re right, Tom. The odds are very good that it has already happened. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your point of view), no one is talking about it.

The Teens call it “Friends with privledges” Casual sex on long missions will undoutedly happen. Why be so obsessed with it? As long as all involved are consenting to it, it’s a human activity we all engage in. I hope they enjoy it often!

(12) Nick Greene says:

Johnnie,

You’re right, it is normal. However, it’s also very normal for people to be curious, especially about activities like this. It’s also important for us to take these things into consideration as we move towards longer duration missions.

Cheers!

Hi. So if people are worried about what would happen to the fetus in space why dont we have an experiment which involves some other species and see the effects?

(14) Nick Greene says:

Hi Sami,

Actually, some experiments have been conducted. Check out the book for some great information on that topic.

Cheers!

Sex in space, and even delivery in space may be very possible… but, how would a baby get back to earth? the re entery to earth can be brutal even for astronauts… how would a new baby fare?
