Did a meteorite that crashed in Peru make villagers sick?

Yahoo! News says, "Villagers in southern Peru were struck by a mysterious illness after a meteorite made a fiery crash to Earth in their area."

After a large explosion, which was first thought to be a plane crash, on Saturday, residents of a remote village, located in the high Andes department of Puno in the Desaguadero region, near the border with Bolivia began to complain of headaches and vomiting brought on by a "strange odor." Police who responded were also struck by the mysterious illness and had to be given oxygen before being hospitalized.

The mysterious meteorite left a 100-foot-wide (30-meter-wide) and 20-foot-deep (six-meter-deep) crater. Rescue workers and experts have been dispatched to the scene.

Yes, this is the same meteorite that caused the illnesses. Apparently the outer shell of the meteorite vaporized upon impacting the soil and water below producing a cloud of vaporized kamitite. My wife complained of nose irritation when she was pouring some of the meteorite dust into a bottle. She said it felt like a “thousand little bees”. This semi-toxic cloud could be likened to tear gas. Strong reaction but no lasting effects.

Sorry, I meant to say trolite, not kamatite.

Randall,

I’m not familiar with trolite. Can you tell us more about it?
