New Mexico Declares Pluto a Planet

From Nick Greene, About.com GuideMarch 8, 2007

Follow me on:

From across the pond, DaveP tells us that the government of New Mexico has decided that Pluto is a planet after all.
Stating, "WHEREAS, the state of New Mexico is a global center for astronomy, astrophysics and planetary science,"

a bill has been presented to the New Mexico congress that declares:

"NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that, as Pluto passes overhead through New Mexico's excellent night skies, it be declared a planet and that March 13, 2007 be declared "Pluto Planet Day" at the legislature."

Read the entire bill.

Good for New Mexico! How dare it be dictated to us that Pluto isn’t a planet! I will celebrate Pluto day.

…from time immemorial, The HINDUS have always stated they are 9 planets. What was the motive in demoting PLUTO?? Pure stupidity! Well done NEW MEXICO

There are some nice bars on Pluto. Overall the residents of Pluto don’t seem to be upset over they’re demotion from a planet to a rock in the sky. I just got back from there and I am a witness!

There was no unanimous decision to demote Pluto. The nine planets in the Indian context included moon and not pluto as observed by GS Nair. Experts are likely to reverse their decision again. I pity the students who would be required to track the revision.
