2006 Oscar Nominees Announced

By January 23, 2007

Follow me on:

The nominees for the 79th Annual Academy Awards (Oscars) were announced this morning. Once again, astronomy and space related films were not to be found in the main categories. In fact, the only film nominated in any categorey I could find, which had even a vague space theme was "Superman Returns" in Visual Effects. At least Kal El was from another planet and arrives on Earth in a spacecraft. He also hangs out in Earth orbit and rescues a group of journalists who are onboard a plane which is carrying a space shuttle.

Of course, the fact that there were very few films released in 2006 with a space theme is the problem. A few movies that came out had at least a peripheral connection. In Universal's "Curious George," George and the Man in the Yellow Hat take off in a rocket at the end of the movie. Spy satellites were used in Paramount's "Mission Impossible III." Besides the Superman movie, those are the only ones I can think of. I, also, did not watch as many movies last year as i have in the past, so if you know of any others that were released, please let us all know.

The Oscars will be shown on ABC at 8PM EST on February 25.
