Lost Apollo 12 Film Discovered
Friday July 7, 2006
Thanks to Barry Johnson, at the From the Earth to the Moon blog, for this story out of NBC San Diego. Two weeks ago, the helicopter pilot from the recovery of the Apollo 12 astronauts discovered a 16 millimeter film reel which had been stored in a box for many years. The film was the only copy of the record of that successful recovery effort from 1969. Once he realized what he had, the pilot immediately sent the film to the USS Hornet's historian in Alameda.
Rolf Sabye was at the helm of the USS Hornet on the day of the recovery, and still works on the ship, now a museum, today. He told the NBC correspondent that "watching the footage brings back the excitement of it all." He said he intends to send a copy of the film to the two remaining astronauts as well as NASA.
