News Media Wrong About Comet Impact

From Nick Greene, About.com Guide   May 22, 2006

Follow me on:

It's bad enough that some nutcase is saying we'll be hit by a piece of Comet 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3 this week, now the media is helping to fuel his paranoia by getting a story completely wrong.

An Australian news website, Northern Star, is reporting that an object that fell near Queensland was a piece of that comet. What the reporter was actually told was that it was a piece of a comet, which is probably true. As we've told you before, many meteors are remnants from comets that passed through our solar system. It's entirely possible that the fireball seen in Australia was a remnant from an old comet. However, it wasn't part of 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3. The closest piece of that comet is still over 6 million miles away.

If the word of responsible scientists, journalists and bloggers isn't enough to convince you, remember that Eric Julien, the doomsdayer who claims we'll be hit on May 25 received his information telepathically from aliens. Riiiight...

And the best part is that I can’t find any news media, except this website and the site you picked up the story from, that is reporting that we will NOT be hit by Apophis! So much for the news media caring about anything but disaster.

Jim,

I can’t be too hard on the media. They do whatever sells papers and/or advertising. People love to read about disasters.

Thanks for reading!

Well. He did say that it would hit the mid Atlantic and create a tidal wave 300 to 500 meters high. This would effectively wipe out the eastern sea board and parts of africa and europe. so millions would die. I cnat think of a better story to cover. If it bleeds it leads !!!

Well, once again, a reporter writes a story without checking the facts. Fact is, yes, the comet is over 6 million miles away. Another fact that was overlooked, is that on May 25th, we will pass through the tail of comet.
Another forgotten fact is that the comet broke apart in 1996, leaving large chunks of ice that we cannot easily detect and are exploding into smaller pieces as they are being heated by our sun. Opps, another fact is that these chunks can slam into the earth and rock our world. Read all about it at http://wachadoo.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=466

Life is a game, and most people are being played… what on earth makes anyone think they are an authority on anything!!! especially an area which lacks so much information…. just because it’s in the news doesn’t make it fact, just as just because people are denying it doesn’t make it a lie… all ANYONE can do is wait and see, and in the mean time, keep your own council and be a good person. There is no excuse for being a ‘bully’.
Light love peace to all

Hi Citizen. I’m not sure who you think is being a bully. You didn’t make that clear.

I certainly wouldn’t claim to be an authority on much, but I won’t be taking my news from crop circles and telepathic aliens.

X-day is a coming soon, and we will all be taken up in the rupture of ‘Bob’ aboard the pleasure crafts of the alien sex gods and godesses. Praise ‘Bob’, the only true voice of JHV1.

The bully comment is my general agnostic way of saying ‘do unto others’, and at least where I’m from, calling someone a ‘nutcase’ constitutes name calling…. which is bullying. But anyway, I’ve been reading your blog and other peoples comments, and I agree that in desperation people will latch on to ‘doomsayers’ theories, as you call them. I have a bipolar friend who has prediction nightmares a few nights before major catastrophes occur, and he as certification for being a ‘nutcase’…. not name calling, he agrees with his psychiatrist! I don’t know what’s the go with that, but who knows??
One short story for you though, I often get church folk knocking at my door to save my soul! and, as a non church subscriber, but still open to all possiblilities, I ask if god still loves the man in the desert, who has never even seen a book (as an extreme example) if he lives a good life, and commits no sin, by chance, to the churches standard? They always say yes… and so I point out that I therefore do not need a book to ’save me’. I follow up with saying that only Jesus is allowed to judgement…. on the day of judgement, and therefore they, as people, have no business to judge whether I ‘need’ saving, and that god speaks to all that will listen, and they should listen to his own words not read a record of ‘god speaking to others’, that that is eaves dropping! oh, and that promoting the ‘resurrection’ is doomsday stories and causes fear… and fear is Satan’s greatest tool!

So far I have witnessed two people turn over their bibles to their companions and walk away, and I never get more than two visits from any one person…

good luck tomorrow!!!

revelations not resurrection….. goes to prove I don’t read it! I’m sure I said it right when it counted though!

Actually, my use of the word nutcase could be construed as insulting to people who actually have some mental problems. This guy who is trying to make people believe that the Earth is in danger tomorrow is far more dangerous than the comet.

Thanks for sharing your story with us. Interesting how some “true believers” can be so easily swayed. It reminds me of 12 step programs. In my experience when someone enters AA or another 12 step program, if they take it to heart for themselves and follow the steps, they’ll do well. Too many enter the program and immediately take what they learn and start analyzing other people. They’re the first ones to drop out and resume old habits.

well…. not to say ner ner, but amusingly, purhaps, my father has been in AA for 26 years, and still trys to convert anyone and everyone…. he even gives tapes of himself he recorded at his meetings to any police that pull him off the road to do a random breath test!

I wonder what will happen tomorrow? but really, no one ever notices us in Australia…. and coincedently the big wave won’t affect us either! Apparently! By the way…. while you are busy debunking false news…. have you ever noticed how big Greenland is on global maps, and how small Australia is compared to the USA? You should therefore check out the actual square kilometer (or mile) comparetivly, and also ‘Peter’s’ global maps… which apparently are based on the geographical ground measurements and the correct warping that occurs when you take a 3d sphere and make it into a 2d picture.

Greenland is really tiny!!!! Well, compared to the land of OZ!

Peace to you

Well, Jim, the facts are that we have already been passing through debris left by the comet on an earlier pass through our solar system, the peak of which was two days ago and it wasn’t even a very good meteor shower.

Thanks for the link, but I prefer my sientific information from someone besides conspiracy theorists and tinfoil hat wearers.

Eh, really? Selling anything MUST be secondary to telling the truth! Your remark shows that they have succeeded in brainwashing you to believe that SALES are the only thing that counts. No wonder so many people hate the media.
