Confusion Over UFOs

Monday May 8, 2006
The Ministry of Defence of the United Kingdom has recently issued a report (created in 2000) on "Unidentified Aerial Phenomena." Although the secret report (which was only made public after a request under the Freedom of Information Act) says, "No evidence exists to suggest that the phenomena seen are hostile or under any type of control, other than that of natural physical forces," it will no doubt deter very few true believers.

Stuart, at the Astronomy Blog, is unhappy with the double meaning of the acronym UFO. I agree with you, Stuart. I have seen many UFOs (Unidentified Flying Objects), but just because I didn't recognize the object doesn't mean I believe it was an alien space craft.

However, I will say right here, for the record, that I do believe there is life, possibly even intelligent, elsewhere in the universe. Now, whether they have ever or will ever visit Earth, I don't know, though I have my doubts.

Dear Mr.Nick Greene:

I’d like to say that this new report is a load of…… This is the same old rethorics from governments all over the world. it is really infortunate that government official and scientists in the field under government payroll insist on denial re this phenomenon. Most of the american population 50% beleive in the existence in UFO in our solar system and beyond;and extraterrestrial life.
For my part, I have seen a UFO of the first kind. What i have seen is no plane or other earthly flying machine no plane could fly in this manner and being of red hot amber coal and oval in shape. I was not dreaming nor thinking of UFO at the time.
this incident happened in Montreal, Quebec Canada circa 1976,1977
Please let’s have the truth for a change

I thank you for letting express my vies on this matter.

Hi Linda,

Thanks for your comments. I can see that you feel passionately about this topic. I don’t believe there is anything wrong with that

I must say that while I don’t believe there is any sort of coverup by the governments of the world, I admit that it’s possible they are wrong about UFOs. I certainly don’t claim to have the answer.

If you, or anyone else, would care to share your story about what you saw, feel free to email me about it. Maybe I can publish some of these experiences so people can compare notes.

I’m curious where you got your statistics of 50% belief.

I would like to add that most astronomers that I know think it likely that there is life somewhere out in the universe. They just think it unlikely that it has visited us yet. Most scientists need better evidence than is put forward at the moment.

I take issue with the view that there is some huge conspiracy. For one thing I am constantly baffled that anyone can believe that all the world’s governments are able to work together perfectly over a prolonged period of time. Why can’t they manage it for anything else?! Secondly, there are many thousands of amateur astronomers around the world who are not on the ‘government payroll’. Considering they spend a lot of their time looking up at night, why do they not report more sightings than the rest of the population?

Call me a skeptic but I want to see some evidence for a conspiracy.

Good points, Stuart. Unfortunately, conspiracy theorists do not think logically, or else they over analyze everything.

I must say I never understood why anyone would want to cover up such visits by aliens. I mean, I know that politicians have absolutely no respect for the average citizen, but what would be the purpose in such a coverup.

Personally, I hope we are able to communicate with intelligent life on another world within my lifetime. I’m afraid that the closest I’ll see before I die might be microscopic life elsewhere in our solar system.

Even microscopic life would be sooooo amazingly cool.
