Thursday September 18, 2003
USATODAY.com reports that a group of astronomers from Case Western Reserve University report that they have discovered a new galaxy. They spotted a group of stars, previously undetected, just outside the huge Andromeda spiral.
"Researchers said the newest known resident of the celestial neighborhood, dubbed Andromeda VIII, was unmasked when they realized that some stars thought to be part of the big spiral galaxy were moving at a different velocity."
"That was the 'aha!' moment," said Heather Morrison, the astronomer who led the four-member team.
