Today is the 34th anniversary of the liftoff of Apollo 11, which carried Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins into the history books. The Space Race, and competition to land on the moon was a product of the Cold War. After the Soviet Union beat the US with the first artificial satellite as well as the first human in space, President Kennedy made it a priority to place a man on the moon first.
